Artist Statement: When reading the script for Carmen-Bizet I realized I wanted to create a design out of the ordinary. After thinking about how I could fit this Opera into a unique design I came across the idea of creatin a vintage circus. In this rendition of Carmen-Bizet, Carmen is an aerialist that works for a circus. While researching I found vintage posters that were the epidemy of Carmen, she’s a free spirt that wants to adventure. The motif of birds was something that I wanted to symbolize in this set as she just wants to fly free. I believe and aerialist was the best representation for this feeling of freedom Carmen craves.
